The bedside lamp gets all the attention but it is the pendant that actually sets the tone of a bedroom. When it is right, the whole room feels more considered. When it is wrong, or just missing, there is a flatness that even great linen cannot fix. We have been looking specifically at pendants that work at beside height rather than ceiling height, the kind designed to hang low and do the job of a table lamp without taking up any surface space. That matters more than people realise until they have a small bedroom or a bedside table already doing too much work. What we were looking for was scale that does not overwhelm, light that is warm and directed rather than harsh, and designs with enough character to hold their own in a room. Some are sculptural. Some are quietly simple. All of them are worth losing the table lamp for good.
