Pendant lighting is where a lot of rooms go quietly wrong. The fitting gets chosen last, after the sofa and the paint and the rug, and it shows. The kitchen island gets a lot of attention and the lighting above it usually does not. Which is a problem, because a poorly chosen pendant can make even a beautiful kitchen feel unfinished. What we were looking for here were pendants that earn their place over the side rather than just filling the space above it. That means scale that actually works, materials that hold up visually against worktops and cabinetry, and light quality that makes the kitchen feel warm in the evening rather than surgical.
