A garden side table is one of those things you only miss when you don’t have one. The drink balanced on the arm of a chair. The book left face down on the paving. The candle that needs somewhere to actually sit. Outdoors living falls apart without a surface and yet most side tables sold for outside are either so flimsy they tip over in a breeze or so ugly you’d rather not look at them. We’ve been looking for the ones that survive a British summer, which means rain, direct sun when it finally arrives, and the kind of daily use that tests joinery and finishes quickly. Weight matters. So does whether the material weathers well or just degrades. We like stone, powder coated steel, solid teak, and occasionally concrete when it’s done properly. Nothing that warps, rusts badly, or looks sad by September. These are the ones that earn a permanent spot outside.
