We have been thinking about what makes a console table work in real life rather than in a showroom, and the answer comes down to a few things. Surface area that can take a scratch. Legs stable enough that a slammed front door does not send everything sideways. A finish that wipes clean without looking like it has been wiped clean a hundred times. These are also pieces that work beyond the hallway. Behind a sofa, in a narrow dining room, in a bedroom with no space for a full sideboard.
